Maternal Subjectivities: Care and Labour Digital Media Competition and Exhibition

Marina Velez has won a runner-up prize in the digital media competition organised by MaMSIE, a research network based in the School of Psychosocial Studies at Birbeck, University of London. The judges agreed that Marina's two photographs, "Strowis Motherhood' and 'My Family 1' create a complex and poignant picture of contemporary motherhood. The work will be exhibited at the gender studies conference on Thursday 19 May 2011 at Birkbeck College, London.

Supanee Gazeley Prize

Supanee Gazeley Prize 'The winner, Marina Velez's work, was deemed exceptional in her referencing of painting, especially in terms of the apparent timelessness of classical Dutch painting such as Vermeer, through the medium of fine art digital photography. The work explored, in a very communicative way, the relationship of time and the fragility of the moment. It possessed extreme focus in the presentation of these ideas and achieved a technical accomplishment in general. It showed a deep understanding of the medium as well as the engagement with particular traditions of thinking through the image and history within contemporary fine art practice.' From the judges of 2010 Supanee Gazeley Prize
