NANO

Kintsukuroi Wafer and Electron Microscopy Images.

These works are the result of a collaboration with scientists working on Nano technology, Priti Gupta and Giorgio Divitini. The works invite a conversation of the micro and the macro and the possibilities and limitations of the human body to cognise the world through our senses. By cognising the world, we turn the cognised into dual elements: subject-object, humanity-nature, self-other. Separation brings about classification and, inevitably, value judgement and hierarchies.

Contemporary art can provide understanding and promote reparation in these complex human experiences and can look with discerning eyes into the misalignments between human action and human values.  Kintsukuroi Wafer, is a man-made sapphire used in Nano technology that was broken and put together again following the Japanese art of repair, known as Kintsukuroi. As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.

These works were presented as part of the Kettle's Yard exhibition Into Boundless Space I Leap, in the Maxwell Centre in Cambridge.
